It?s time for vacation and you want to take your loving pet with you on the trip. The only problem that arises is that you will be using the airlines for travel. Is it safe to take your pet on airlines? Are there certain precautions that you should take for the airline trip and pet travel? Travel with pets can be extremely rewarding. Here are some tips for taking your pets on airlines.

Taking Your Pets on Airlines: Age of Your Pet

One big consideration to keep in mind if you travel with pets is the age of the pet. The airline and government regulations will not allow a pet that is less than eight weeks of age or one that is still nursing for airline travel. Stop and think about it a moment. You really do not want to put that type of stress and new environment on a pet that is so young. If your pet is young, really consider having a pet sitter while you are on vacation or a family member help you take care of them.

Another consideration is if your pet is reaching or in the senior pet years. Airline travel can be very stressful on a pet. Older pets are used to their routines and environment. It is important to avoid taking an older pet for airline travel as much as possible.

Taking Your Pets on Airlines: Special Medical Conditions

If your pet has special medical conditions, it is important to not have them travel on an airline. Prior to any airline trip for your pet, take them to the vet. Let the vet know that you are considering flying with your pet. The vet can advise you if it is a possible consideration for your specific pet. The money you spend at this vet visit is well worth every penny because it could end up saving your pet?s life.

Many airline regulations require that 10 days prior to your trip or less that you have a medical certificate from your vet stating that the pet is healthy enough to fly.

Taking Your Pets on Airlines: Kennel Material

You should not just use any ordinary kennel when it comes to pets and airlines. Pet travel can be very stressful if the proper kennel is not used for the airline trip. The first consideration is that the how sturdy the kennel is. Be certain that the kennel is made from top-quality materials. The last thing you want is for your pet to escape the kennel and to be loose in the luggage cabin of the airplane.

Taking Your Pets on Airlines: Ventilation of the Kennel

According to the Federal Aviation Commission, a minimum of fourteen percent of the wall space should have ventilation for your kennel for pet air travel. You want to have ample space for a good amount of air flow and ventilation for your pet to be comfortable as possible while flying.

Taking Your Pets on Airlines: Kennel Space

The space of the kennel should be enough for your pet to stand, turn and lay completely stretched out. You are allowed to put two animals of the same breed in one kennel, but should keep in mind the space and ventilation needs should you do so. You would not want to sit in a compact and tight space with no way to move around while you are flying. Do not do it to your pet either.

Taking Your Pets on Airlines: Kennel Handle

The kennel must have a handle that is sturdy and easy to transport your pet around. It is important that the luggage handlers be able to move your pet around.

Taking Your Pets on Airlines: Feeding and Medications

If your pet must travel for more than twenty-four hours, you will need to leave instructions for food and medication on the outside of the kennel. If you are going so far away that you must travel for more than twenty-four hours try to avoid taking your pet on a flight at all. It is worth the extra money to have someone drive your pet to you or to hire someone to watch your pet if you are not moving to a new home.
